#T5W: Books That Would Make Good Video Games


Probably the best books that would make videos games are the ones with lots of action in them. It turns out I don’t read many books that fit that description, so I had to get creative. Hopefully my choices make even a little sense. Here we go!

5. Transmaniacon by John Shirley. This one fits in with my initial idea that action, good pacing, and a crazy story would be required to make a book into a decent game. This especially would be unlike anything anyone has ever played before. A futuristic, post-apocalyptic setting with all these different cities the player can travel to that each have their own, strange goings-on. Alongside an overarching mystery to be solved that turns out to be rather mind-blowing. This one might be best as an indie title on Steam.

4. The Visitors by Clifford Simak. This would definitely be a quieter, slower paced game. One of those that’s story-driven and requires a lot of dialogue options. The premise being that aliens come to earth, but really all they do is offer us creature comforts, like new cars full of alien technology. But everything is not as it seems. As the main character, you have to uncover the reason why this is happening and what the aliens really want. So a sci-fi point-and-click adventure.

3. Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix. In the tradition of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, this could be a truly terrifying horror game. But with a little tongue-in-cheek humor to go along with it. You, the player, are trapped in a department store where you work and must fight the violent ghosts while also freeing your friends. That’s actually the perfect formula for a successful horror game of the AAA variety.

2. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. This would be a very complicated game that would probably require a whole new game engine, unless one exists that I don’t know about. There would be several types of gameplay involved, and it would require that the player switch between six different characters at any given time to finish the story. Totally non-linear storytelling with clues as to who you should play as next. This would be so intricate, only a big company like BioWare could take it on, most likely.

1. Stephen King. No specific title listed here because the idea is to make a fighting game using his most famous characters. Who wouldn’t want to see a fight between Randall Flagg and Pennywise? Or Kurt Barlow and Annie Wilkes? Or maybe Jack Torrance versus Cujo? Each character would have specific moves and powers. There’d be loads of references to all the various stories and scenarios. We could have a hit on our hands here.
